I give you the end of a golden string,
Only wind it into a ball:
It will lead you in at Heavens gate,
Built in Jerusalems wall.
—WILLIAM BLAKE.
The Blake Society sets out to honour & celebrate William Blake (1757-1827), engraver, poet, painter & prophet. The Blake Society was founded in 1985 at St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, & has been meeting regularly in London since 1986, with monthly speakers, including many of the most eminent scholars in the field. It aims to attract everyone with an interest in Blake, providing a focus for the study & appreciation of Blake in the London he knew. If there is the Blake you know, there is also the Blake you don’t know. After two hundred years, he is still a challenge & an inspiration.
We are a serious but not a stuffy group. We bring together scholars & enthusiasts, amateurs & professionals, on equal terms to celebrate the genius of William Blake. The subscription is now £20.00 per year (£10.00 unwaged). Larger donations are, of course, welcome. The Blake Society is a voluntary organisation and the subscription covers the costs of printing and posting the programmes, free entry to all our meetings held throughout the year, a copy of the Society’s Blake Journal & a free Ticket to the Annual Lecture. Our regular meeting place is the City of Westminster Archives Centre, 4 St Ann’s Street, London SW1P 2DE. Join today.
Blake Society members can determine the form and direction of the Society by proposing ideas that you would like to see the Society pursue. If you have an event you would like to suggest or organise then please contact us with details.
